Bombshell for Dartmouth 14th April 2016 NHS are planning to cut back drastically on health services available in Dartmouth by closing the Dartmouth cottage hospital, clinic and Minor Injuries Unit. Health services are to be concentrated in Totnes and there is to be greater efforts to support patients who stay at home. This was revealed at a meeting of stakeholders held in Dartmouth on April 13. The good news is that NHS planners support the proposal to establish a new health centre at the top of the town to accommodate the GP practice and some other clinical services (yet to be revealed). Our MIU is already closed and will not reopen despite earlier promises to the contrary. The NHS are in discussion with the Dartmouth Medical Practice on how the new facility will be established and where. Although we are essentially being presented with a fait accompli, NHS managers are planning a series of public consultations starting in early May. A key issue will be to get an assurance from the Government that the proceeds of the sale of the existing cottage hospital and clinic sites will be earmaked for the new health facility. This is by no means certain.
